Assos (Behram Kale)

General History
It is accepted that Assos was orginally built by the Metyniman people of Lesbons in the tenth Century B.C. By the eleventh century B.C. Asoss had become the mast powerful and richest by the Persians and changet hands again in 540 B.C.,being taken by the Lydians.

Assos became an independent city state at the time of the invasion of Asia by Alexander the Great. After the death of Alexander, however, the city fell to the king of Pergamon. By 331 B.C. it had become part of the Roman Empire, during wicht it became famous for the towbswicht were constructed and sold there. After the fall of the Roman Empirme, Assos became the furthest bourdray of the Byzantine Empire. it was made the Cathedral city of the Byzantine bishobs, Later, the ancient city was destroyed by the Emperal Theodosius. İn honour of the commander of the Byzantines, Makhram, its name was changed to Makhramion.

It was an important part, although the city properlies on higher ground, 235 metres above the port area itself. The city was walled, the walls extending to three kilometres and rising to twenty metres in places, with two gread entry gates.
The west gate leads to the region of Troas, and the east Gate to a route leading past Mount ida to Pergamon. Besides these main gates, there were twelve lesser gates and one large round defence tower. Inside the west gate can be seen the side of a gymnasium.
A theatre was situated on the sounth side of the agora, overlooking the sea.

The Temple Of Athena
Athena was the doughter of Zeus and one of the twelve goddesses of Olympus.
According to ancient mythology, it was she who first tought women the craft of weavinf. To this day, Behramkale and the surroundung region are carpet and rug weaving.
Athane's temple at Assos is unique and of great archeological significanse, conce it is the only surviving building in the Doric style of veri ancient data.
